Qatar Charity (QC) inaugurated a medical waste treatment plant in the Gaza Strip, powered by electric and solar energy. This comes in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government, the Joint Services Council for Solid Waste Management, and many international institutions working in the Gaza Strip.
The project, which is worth more than QR 1mn, is one of the qualitative projects that work on developing the medical waste management model by providing facilities for the treatment and safe disposal of medical waste in environmentally and socially effective ways.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the Mayor of Khan Yunis Alaa El-Din El-Batta, thanked the State of Qatar, the benefactors of Qatar, and Qatar Charity for helping improve the services provided to the Palestinian people in all fields. He commended the efforts of all those who contributed to the completion of this project.
Al-Battah emphasized the importance of the role of the supporters in operationalizing the medical waste management system in southern Gaza, by providing facilities for the treatment and safe disposal of medical waste in an environmentally and socially effective way.
This project is the continuation of the efforts exerted by the international and local bodies in Palestine to ensure cooperation and participation in completing the establishment and operation of the medical waste management project.
Qatar Charity supplied, installed, and operated a solar energy system to provide the electricity necessary to operate medical waste treatment equipment. It also carried out the supply, installation and operation of medium-voltage overhead and underground power lines for the medical waste treatment plant.
This project is the result of a partnership and cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which led the launch of a program to establish a health care waste management system in Gaza in 2017, aiming to operationalize the medical waste management system in southern Gaza.
The project works on reducing the operational expenses of the treatment, which was carried out through generators that require very high operating expenses. The reduction value is not less than 75 percent of the previous cost.
It is worth mentioning that work on the project started about two years ago. It included establishing and operating the medical waste management project in Gaza, in addition to ensuring the sustainability of the project.
