Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said was announced here Saturday as the new Sultan of the Sultanate of Oman, in succession to Sultan Qaboos bin Said who died Friday evening.
Oman News Agency reported today that the Defence Council said that it received a reply from the Royal Family, in which they said that out of gratitude and appreciation to Sultan Qaboos bin Said, they appointed the person the late Sultan chose in his will, announcing Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said as the Sultan of Oman.
